In 1974 I opened a Judo dojo (school) in Battle Creek, Michigan. I was captain of my college Judo team (Central Michigan University) and later became team coach. I was also a member of the CMU Karate Club and studied several Japanese/Okinawan and Korean Karate styles, both on campus and off. I later practiced several Kung Fu systems in Washington D.C., West Virginia, California, and Hawaii.
It was in Hawaii that I started my Aikido journey, 40 years ago. I started my training at the University of Hawaii under Harry Ito Sensei. Ito Sensei is today one of the oldest most respected masters in the Ki No Kenkyukai Aikido system. Later I studied with Tri Thong Dang Shihan (Aikido 6th Dan and founder of the Vietnamese Aikido Federation, Judo 6th Dan and founder of the Vietnamese Judo Federation, and Kung Fu Master) in Sacramento, California. Over the years we remained close and I'm fortunate that I was able to spend about 10 hours of intense study and conversation with him shortly before his death in 1995.
Over 30 years ago I started studying with Seidokan Aikido Kancho (founder and leader of the system), Rod Kobayashi Shihan. (Shihan means master teacher or teacher of teachers.) When I first moved to Los Angeles I studied at 5 different Aikido dojo; each one for about a month, to decide which dojo I would call home. Kobayashi Sensei, his senior teachers and students left no doubt about where that would be. Even though he is now gone, what he left us… I will be studying for the rest of my life.
The Aikido Institute of Michigan was started when I returned home to Battle Creek. At least four times each year I would return to California to train with Kobayashi Sensei, attend his camps, and once each year would host a seminar for him in Michigan. In 1988 I started regular trips to Japan and have trained at the Aikikai in Shinjuku, Tokyo and also trained with one of Kobayashi Sensei's Shin shin Toitsu Aikido teachers in Chiba, Japan. During one of my earlier trips I also went to the headquarters dojo for Tohei Sensei's Ki Society. These trainings and advanced seminars with instructors in the US have only made me appreciate the simplicity and truth of Kobayashi Sensei's Seidokan Aikido even more.
A few years ago I was promoted to Sichidan or 7th degree black belt in Seidokan Aikido. About a year after my promotion to Sichidan I was made Seidokan Aikido Shihan-Bucho; this means; in charge of all the master ranked teachers in our world-wide organization. Most recently I was named Seidokan Kancho.--
